There are unique weapons (which upgrade with colorless demon souls, basically DeS's Demon Titanite) that scale well with Faith. There is also one normal, Faith scaling upgrade path that works on STR weapons (most straight swords, blunt, axes, and some polearms). You get more dps from the normal paths and having either Str or Dex up. Buffs are just meant to amplify damage further, which you can't do with the faith path if i'm not mistaken. While yes, people may run, its still a nice way to amp the damage. Not all people run away when they see a dmb ....
